Motorcycle riding in Mexico City is not for the faint of heart:
  • Almost getting hit by a bus
  • Four open manholes
  • One guy crossing the highway with a bundle of lumber
  • Twice, cars trying to force me off the road (piazza delivery guys give you a bad rep.)
  • 123kph on a 150cc motorcycle, full out fifth gear
  • Unbelievable construction, traffic going from four lanes to two lanes with no warning
  • Every type of debris you can imagine in the road; rocks, animals, boxes, construction materials
I say it to myself over and over "expect anything at any time"  I see things I can't believe, "is that guy really going to run across four lanes of a highway with a bundle of lumber?"

I rode to Tres MarĂas, Morelos, Mexico, today, from DF (82km one way).  Once we got off the freeway and onto the road near Tres Marias, the rode was beautiful.  But trying to ride a 150cc motorcycle 60mph (top speed is 70mph full tuck, with lots of time) is a challenge.  It is all about momentum.  Don't use the brakes, just ease off the gas and keep your speed up.

Going up a hill, Elrich waved me on to pass the truck, get around the truck to find a bus coming my way, only just made it passing the truck, missed the bus by inches, I thought I was finished, good lesson, it takes lots of time to pass with a 150cc motocycle.

When I was in college I had a Buick station wagon, I could drive that wagon faster then most people could drive sports cars.  As Lance Armstrong said "it is not about the bike".  Love pushing a 150cc piazza delivery motorcycle, almost keeping up with an Yamaha R6.

* P.S. I need to get a tank bag to avoid the "is that a cable lock in your pocket or are you just happy to see me look?"

March 2009
April 2009
While my motorcycle was being repaired in Indianapolis, got loaner bikes, maybe the best thing to happen to me in Indianapolis!  Loved, loved the K1300, amazing motorcycle.

First Service Yamaha FZ16

Today was the first service on the FZ16
  • Had the oil changed, only 155 kilometers
  • 900 pesos for service
  • Adjusted the clutch
  • Adjusted the rear brake
  • Adjusted the idle
Bike rides much better!  no longer stalling at lights, engine seems much smoother.  Rene at Fast Yamaha did a great job.
He recommended that only have the choke on for a few seconds, then turn off and let the engine warm up for 1-2 minutes before ridding.  Recommended that I take a ride to Pachuga to break in the engine.

Had the after market exhaust
Aftermarket chain and rear sprocket
Replacement exhaust shroud
Sliders

Fast Yamaha seems like a great shop.

Ducati Multistrada Rental

Started the day 9:30AM at Dubbelju, 689A Bryant Street, San Francisco, CA, great motorcycle rental place.  Rented a Ducati, Multistrada 1000, beautiful bike.  $214 for the day, with insurance, etc.

Rode to Caldecott Tunnel, then to Fish Ranch Road, then to Lake Anza, still fogged in.   Had brought my bathing suit but too cold to go swimming.  Riding back to Skyline Blvd, the left hand mirror fell off, dangling by cable, called rental shop and went to Berkeley Performance and they took the mirror off and I went back to the Dubbeliu for another bike.  Didn't want to ride without a mirror or a turn signal.  Got a Suzuki SV650, very different bike.

Rode back to Tunnel Road and along Skyline Blvd. then to:
Hong Kong BBQ Restaurant
20918 Redwood Road, Castro Valley, CA 94546

Lunch of BBQ Pork, rode back to Pinehurst Road, maybe my favorite Road anywhere.  BAck along Skyline and back to San Francisco.
